RG secure acquittal for their client
Geo Song, working with Ayeh Nowroozi and instructing Sean Kivdeh of 187 Chambers, secured an acquittal for their client, a young Iranian woman, accused of importing class A drugs into the United Kingdom before Chelmsford Crown Court.
It was the prosecution’s case that S had been working with her sister and another man to bring class A drugs into the country. S had been stopped, interrogated and arrested by Border Force Officers upon her arrival into the United Kingdom from Iran. S was accused of fraudulently importing over 12 kilograms of heroin into the country, which had been concealed in unsuspecting packages within a suitcase she had been paid to travel with.
Geo Song and Ayeh Nowroozi, instructing Sean Kivdeh of 187 Chambers, were successful in defending S. The prosecution offered no evidence on both counts on the first day of trial before Chelmsford Crown Court. S was subsequently discharged from custody on the same day.
In preparing the case and reviewing several thousands of pages of messages between S and the co-defendants, the team noticed that S had been coerced into bringing the suitcase containing drugs. Geo, Ayeh, and Sean worked hard to prepare S’s defence that she was unaware of the drugs in the suitcase and that her knowledge of the operation was limited to what she had been told by her sister.
Though her fluent Iranian, Ayeh was able to build a strong rapport with S, which assisted in taking detailed instructions on the context of S’s extent of knowledge and her relationship with her co-defendants.
