Controlling and Coercive Behaviour Acquittal
Sophia Vargas Sanchez’s client, P, was found not guilty of all four charges he was indicted on before Inner London Crown Court.
P was accused of controlling and coercive behaviour across a 5-year relationship as well as threats to kill, theft and criminal damage against the complainant’s parents.
Through her fluent Spanish and understanding of P’s native culture, Sophia was able to build a rapport with P that led to taking detailed instructions on the context of P’s relationship with the complainant and her parents. These proved pivotal to the defence case.
This well-rounded picture allowed for essential disclosure requests which, upon service, revealed a loving relationship with the complainant as well as a history of police call outs in which P had at times been the victim.
After less than 2 hours of deliberation, P was unanimously acquitted of all charges.
